Much less time, unfortunately but 2 major pieces of news. First, we have fully deleted the lights. Why?
- weight
- access
- aero
- budget
The lights aren’t super heavy, but they’re on the list of things that can be removed on the path to cut nearly 200lbs. We’re not going to remove doors, but bumpers, door glass, side glass are all on the menu.
The mechanism also obstructs some access to belts, radiator fans and now the new external oil cooler. So there an added benefit for inspecting and adjusting in a very busy and congested part of the engine bay.

Importantly there are no popup lights!
Finally, there is the Lemons budget. We touched on this in the last update. The headlights should fetch around 150. The LED and plexi cover cost about $50 all in and so, we freed up $100 that easily covers our new external oil cooler ($65) and some other bits.

And we’ve already improvised some cheap lenses. Heat gun + plexi + repurposed hose clamps = lenses, sort of.

Second bit of news is that we’ve kept the emissions system. The fuel vapor cannister was failing. New one is ~$360, but the Vanagon from the same era…$19. Required minor mods, but here we go.
