That mangled bit of mettle on the ground has seen better days. It’s going to be retired in favor of some plywood, aluminum (probably from scrap Tesla parts from a nearby bodyshop) to make some aero and caliper cooling bits.

But I digress. That’s oil on the garage floor. And it looks like there is a competition across a bunch of failing seals – it’s possible the oil cooler is winning, but as we remove a few more bits, oil pump/main crank seems to be putting in an impressive contribution to see who can leak the most oil.

We have to tear down and inspect and clean the engine anyway – haven’t done that since college. And now actually have real tools to do it and can order stuff vs try to make/fix/fake it!

One fun part of reviewing the engine is understanding what’s happening in vacuum hose land – finding leaks, randomly dangling tubes, etc. Also, it’s notable that this diagram is mounted on the inside of the engine bay. There is likely some expected stuff like fuel pressure regulation. But also some new stuff like emissions controls. Which we already checked/fixed for SMOGGED!.
